ATHENS SINGERS NOVEMBER 2015 CONCERT - CAPTAIN NOAH AND HIS FLOATING ZOO, AESOP'S FABLES

The theme of our autumn concert is animals . Aesop was  a slave living in ancient Greece in the sixth century BC .
His moralistic stories used animals to depict truths about human life . Bob Chilcot has taken five of these stories
and created vivid musical images which bring the characters to life . The second work in our concert, Grieg's
famous Peer Gynt Suite no. 1, opens with the Morning Mood, filling us with feelings of fields and woods and birds
flying. It finishes with the Hall of the Mountain King, where the trolls, half human half beast, taunt Peer Gynt .
The third work in our concert is a wonderful pop cantata, Captain Noah and his Floating Zoo, words by Michael Flanders
and music by Joseph Horovitz . It was originally written for children's choirs, but soon got arranged for full-harmony
choirs and was made famous by the Kings Singers, for whom Chilcot also wrote much music . It follows the Biblical story
quite closely, but with typical Flanders' humour.
