For this interview i was given a demo of "Kyrie" a day before.
Truth is i liked it! I usually need a week to properly appreciate a cd of
music but in this case i have the strong feeling
my first impression is not going to change.
The interview was held at "IonSoundLaboratorium" which is the studio the whole thing was recorded and i must say that nothing outside the building gives you any sign of what's inside!

"IonSoundLaboratorium" is practically a big appartment in the centre of Athens full of paintings (mostly Dali), plants, 70's carpets, weird momentos
and things spread all over the place, b/w photos on the walls, synthesizers
and computers, a dark room and a vocal room wrapped (literally) in egg cartons!
All in all it looks like a trendy New York appartment to my eyes,
more than anything else.
("this is not necessarily a compliment", Ion kindly suggested)

A.B. Ion i like these paintings a lot!
ION: ..bought them in Bucarest from a Romanian painter who does excellent forgeries!
A.B. Have they inspired you for the "kyrie" layout? There is the same
semi surrealistic- symbolistic quality to them.

ION. who knows...Not intentionally however, no.
A.B. Mr.Tilley what a nice CD you have. Well done!
R.T. you're too kind!
A.B. How long did you take to complete the recordings?
R.T. too long!
ION. 20 days.
A.B. What? Once i listened to it i imagined much longer.
ION. actually it was longer! If you take into account all the graphic work and
some alternarive mixes i did, it took indeed a bit longer.
.
A.B. This album has everything. Choirs, orchestras, even dance rhythms.
I mostly enjoyed "Sonrise" which sounds like a rhythmic chinese piece
and "Glorify Thy Name".

ION. it's funny you mention "Glorify". When Roger first played it to me i knew
he had seen a gospel side of it.
Now, if you set your mind free, you can almost see the women
sing and keep the rhythm by clapping their hands!

A.B. I noticed 3 choir pieces in the album. Is it real choirs? How difficult has it been to record those pieces?
R.T. we thought the choirs were necessary to introduce the melodies and to provide the theme tune for St.Andrew's 50th anniversary.
ION. yes... for "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" we wanted a boys' choir.
The one we used sounds slightly "synthetic" but thats the effect we
were after..
For the next two pieces i used the best choir samples available on the
market yet i made a combination of those to create a choir i really liked!

A.B. The selection of the pieces was made by you both?
ION. No. It was Roger's..
A.B. What about the ghost track? I thought the cd was over and then suddenly it started playing again.
ION. that's a thing becoming ever so popular these days. The one in "Kyrie" is
a piano improvisation of "Sonrise"..

A.B. What is it that you like the most and the least about "Kyrie" ?
R.T. the most, undoubtly the cover! The least, the arguments necessary
to produce the album.

ION. i can't really give you a straight answer. "Kyrie", is the result of 2 persons'
work at a certain moment in time. This same work if it was to be done maybe 3 months later it would be different, sound different.
.
A.B. Are you happy with the results?
R.T. very!!
ION. (smiles)
A.B. A few words about your next step... your future plans.
R.T. maybe a dance album!
ION. absolutely! A fully electronic album. With some songs in it. I want to sing.. Roger will sing too! How about a synthesized version of "Ena Proino" Artemis?
A.B. Oh! I like it already!
