Mr
Tilley i've just listened to your "Introducing the Organ"
album and i thoroughly enjoyed it! What's the aim of this work?
Most people don't really know what an "organ"
is,especially in Greece where
churches don't have them. This cd aims to show just what an organ
can
do;how it creates a whole variety of sounds, how it has been used
over the centuries.
How about the selection of the pieces in the
album. Was there any specific concept behind it?
Again, when most people think of the organ, they
think of the large works of
J.S.Bach.Wonderful though they may be,this creates a limited view
of the instrument.
The pieces were chosen to give a wider range of styles and sounds
so that the listener can gain a clearer picture of the nature of
the instrument.
Have there been any special techniques or
tricks you used during the recording?
The answer would be "yes", but that
begs the question as whether i'm going
to reveal them.Of course, synthesizers and computers allow an unlimited
range of techniques or tricks to produce a sound, but the final
product
depends on collaboration and personal skill.
How was your collaboration with Ion(aka.Ioannis
D)?
The
concept was Ioannis.I simply provided the notes.Beyond that there
are
hundrends of jobs in making a recording. The actual organ was created
in the studio, mixing waveforms and adjusting the acoustics until
we had just the
sound we wanted. We sat down each day for a week to record and there
were moments where we got "stuck", but we patiently unravelled
them
until we were back on track.
Recording also creates nerves for a player and Ioannis even thought
to have
the towel ready to dry my sweaty palms when my fingers started sliding
on the keys.
It was a fantastically calm and efficient experience!
I was extremely fortunate with the sleeve photography and design.Ion
is also
a skilled photographer.I was amazed how quickly he took the photos
and
designed the sleeve.
I didn't have to worry about a thing because he knew what he was
doing
so well..
Are you satisfied with this work?
The cd achieves its goal,so i'm very satisfied. It
looks good and it
sounds good.As someone who has listened to hundrends of recordings
of organs,i can say that this is definitely a good one.Firstly,
the sound
is engineered to a better quality than on most recordings, secondly
it's
enjoyable for the listener. For me personally it's the collaboration
with
someone who knows what he's doing.
How about your future plans?
This is a good beginning. At least, when you
know that the working conditions are productive you think positively
towards future projects.I don't know just what we'll produce, but
there will be something soon.
